Details

This award-winning programme was made some while ago and has become a classic in educational TV with copies to be found in educational establishments all over the world. For this release we have re-mastered the programme from the original 1983 footage and made some minor editorial changes and technical improvements that were not possible the first time round. The historical dimension provides added impact. Audience: For students needing to understand the concept of defence mechanisms. Just about all healthcare students then. Content: Beginning with denial, the first case depicts a normal reaction to loss; a wife cannot believe her husband is dead. Another example shows a smoker in a hospital bed. He has gangrene of his right foot, it is clear to the visiting doctor that it will require amputation below the knee, the same as his left foot. He denies this and tries to convince us that it is getting better - yet amputation tomorrow will be the inevitable outcome. A very thin, anorexic patient telling us that she needs to be six or seven pounds lighter is another illustration of denial. Projection, regression and repression are presented in a similar manner - progressing from the normal use as a coping mechanism to the more pathological defence mechanism. Can also be used in a live lecture setting or private study. The clear commentary enables the programme to be used for self-teaching. Running Time: 20 minutes
