Jo is pregnant, but something is wrong. She attends the labour ward and we see her story unfold.
We are delighted to release this director's cut DVD. The script was developed by a midwife, Liz Hopper, in conjunction with a psychiatrist, Andrew Macaulay. Others involved included: Ruth Ainsworth, Steven Hanvey, Shirley Steel, Ian Ainsworth-Smith, Susan Derrick, Tony Jaques, Adam Winkler and Terry Roberts.
How do you get across a positive message and give guidance? We chose the route of drama-documentary with commentary. This technique gives the most control over the final content, but done badly and the audience are lost. Considerable international recognition was accorded to Not too small to mourn when it was first released in 1991.

But we wanted to tell the story in a number of ways.
Jenny gives her account of the awful experience she found it to be and the long-term consequences on her mental health. We advise that this short introduction can be used as scene setting during a lecture.
Another couple (Loss before Life) describe an early miscarriage and the lack of support that made it very difficult for them. The follow-up interview provides us with the opportunity to hear their reflections on the matter 5 years later. This is a good, upbeat, but realistic note to conclude a lecture.
Here we see liaison psychiatry in action. Grief, in itself is not a mental illness, but handled badly, these situations can lead to maladaptive coping strategies, with long-term costs to relationships and health. Depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder can follow on.
Main use is in a library or home setting for private study. Programmes are designed to run uninterrupted.
